Historically, a boudoir was a woman’s dressing room or private chamber in close proximity to the “bedchamber” she shared with her husband. Today, it has become quite fashionable to take “boudoir photos”, or bedroom photos, in various styles. Depending on the woman, and the photographer, you may take them in an old-fashioned way, in lingerie, a pin-up girl style or whatever you agree upon in advance.
It is a good idea to research the photographer and their body of work prior to setting up your appointment. You can start with a simple “Google Search” by zip code or city and go from there. If you know a photographer who’s work you like, feel free to ask them if they will take your boudoir photos for you – most reputable photographers who shoot portraits should be able to take boudoir photos or pin-up photos quite easily. If you live in a smaller town, or if you are on a budget, you may want to reach out to the Photography Department of the local University to find a student who will shoot your boudoir session.
Start by asking the photographer to see their portfolio (many will have an online portfolio on their website). Be sure to talk about all costs up front. Find out if they charge by the hour, by the number of photos, if they will retouch your photos after the shoot, how many costume changes you will be allowed, etc. Ask as many questions as you can before hiring your photographer and be sure to get everything in writing.
Once you select a photographer, ask if they have a studio and if they have backdrops and / or furniture that will help you complete your desired look. If not, consider renting an upscale hotel room for the day of the shoot. Be sure there is plenty of light and privacy.
Depending on the photographer you select, you may go to the photographer’s studio, a luxury hotel room or your own home. Ask the photographer what type of props they have available to you. If they don’t have enough (or any) purchase some that will help make your photos as sexy as you will want them to be. Maybe some fancy pillows or lace throw.
A professional photographer will make you feel very comfortable. They will position you so that your best side is showing and your poses should be flattering. Take the advice of your photographer even if you feel uncomfortable, after all they are the professional. Your photographer should be able to show you some of the shots, if you are not happy with them, ask them if you can take a few more.
Again, this should be something that is discussed with your photographer first. Will they accommodate a group? If so, how many girls can have their photos taken?
You can start by hiring a stylist to do your hair and make up prior to the shot. Have the stylist come early to the location of the shoot so they can work on the first girl before the shoot. This way, all the girls will have time to primp before their photo session.
Consider timing. Each girl will take at least a half-hour for hair and make-up. The girls will have to get dressed and then they will have their time in front of hte camera. Depending on what type of session you’ve arranged, each girl’s photo session could take any where from 15 minutes to an hour – maybe more.
Because your photo session will take about a half-day, bring some food, wine, champagne and anything else you may need for the day. Bring robes or sweats so you can lounge around sipping champagne while you’re waiting for your photo session.
Just how sexy do you feel? How sexy do you want to get for your man? What is your personality type? Do you want to stay within your comfort zone, or will this be your time to to go all out and do something compeletely out of the ordinary. I say – go all out! You’ve likely been dieting for your big day, so you probably look great. Let this be your time to let your inner-vixen rage! Go ahead, take some racy photos for you and your husband-to-be to keep forever.
